LODGE MILESTONES

there have been significant milestones during the history of the Lodge.  These are events which changed the direction of the Lodge or were otherwise noteworthy.  You can get more information from the Newsletter archive.

2014

Charles Luke was named at Chair of the Salt Lake City Commission.  He served as a Lodge Vice Chief in 1988-89.

Sept. -  the big event seemed to be the Kick-off party held by the Lodge officers

June - Calvin Condie became the Lodge Adviser succeding Dave Halliday who had served 33 years.Calvin has previously served as a Scoutmaster, with local Cubbing and as an Assitant Lodge Adviser. Cals son Shawn had served as the Lodge Chief and his son Kyle as a Lodge Vice Chief.

Jan - The Lodge introduced a new Web Site and a YouTube site, encouraging the youth to use its History and add to it. The web site was the product of Jacques de Bois and Emile Le Clerk who constructed it.

2008

June - Camp elections were resumed partially after several years of having no elections at Camp

2007

Oct - 3rd Annual Showando sponsored by the Lodge for Scoutmasters and Senior Patro Leaders.

Mar - 125 Candidates were elected at Klondyke Derby activities in the districts. .  This was a high for this event.

2006

Legend mailed out in Color.  Lodge membership dipped just below 1000 for the first time since 1984.  Lodge Ordeals at summer camp had ended at the request of the council camping director.

2005

Aug - Summer Camp Ordeal netted 350 new members

Community Service at Wheeler Farms (Days of '47), Festival of Trees, Food Bank - new high in service hours. Participation with the Days of '47 and the Food bank continued for several years.

2004

Oct - 2nd Annual Show an Do held for unit leaders with youth leaders

June-July Served at the Healing Fields in Sandy - over 4000 flags placed and taken down.This continued for several years.

Mar - Two chapters held Ordeal on Antelope Island - freezing cold.

2003

Nov - First Lodge Pow-Wow in several years - classes and dance competition.

Oct - 1st Annual Show an Do.for Scoutmasters, SPL's, Team Coaches, and youth leaders.  Introduced the Game File and gave to participants - over 150 program cards per file.

1997

Dec - Brandon Fessler Election as the 1998 Western Region Chief, formerly a Lodge Chief and Section Chief.  3rd National officer

1995

Dec - Ryan J. Pitts elected as the National Chief. for 1996  Formerly the Lodge and Section Chief.. First National Chief

1994

June - Lodge Ended with 2152 members, 1352 Candidates elected and 692 new Ordeals inducted - the highest numbers ever. The lodge had changed the end of the year to be June 30th rather than December.  Rand McMullin was the Chief.

1993

Dec - Dave Halliday appointed to the National Order of the Arrow Committee Committee.

1989

Dec - Ryan Mecham elected as the Western Region Chief - the first national officer from the lodge.  Ryan had served as a Lodge Vice Chief, the Section Chief and was one of the youngest members to be elected to national office.

The name of the newsletter was changed to, The Legend.

1988

The lodge participated in the 1st Council Jamboral outside of Park City this participation wold continue at each Jamboral thereafter until 2013.

1987

June - Coup Trail established with Steve Sugden as the first Chief and Ace Thacker as the first Adviers.  Held at Camp Tomahawk, East for of the Bear

Jan - First Recipients of the Founder's Award, Virgil Christensen, Crarg Edwards, Jared Johnstone.1986

At the Scout-O-Rama the lodge had 14 booths, 4 tipi exhibits, and hourly dance performances.

1985

the year end report indicated that the lodge held, 45 Eagle Ceremonies, 99 Arrow of Light Ceremonies, 100 Dance Team performances.  It membership was 1134.

1984

LECM was moved to Murray High.  February Scouting displays were set up by the Lodge at teh ZCMI Mall with the dance team participating.

1983

June - Lodge Chief Trent Grose changed the3 election of Lodge Officers from the November Fall Conclave to the Summer Fellowship so that New officers would be in place as the new council and district officers took their positions.

The 2nd Where to Go Camping Book was released for purchase.  Todd Turnblom was the Editor.

The lodge saw the passing of Robert Kerr.  Bob had served as the Chapter Adviser for Sage chapter for 18 years.

1982

the Fall Ordeal of some 75 candidates, re-roofed one of the cabins, painted the nature lodge, built a permanent ceremony ground and leveled and rocked a dance ring at Tracy

1981

the Lodge was given the old ranger's cabin at Tracy to rehabilitate ans due for its own Lodge. Two years later the cabin would be lost in a propane explosion.

1980

Nov - Dave Halliday appointed Lodge Adviser to succeed Bert Holfeltz.  Dave had been a Scoutmaster, Disttrict Chairman, Council Training Chairman and Chapter adviser prior to his appointment.

Dec - Dr. Bryce Fairbanks appointed to the National Order of the Arrow Committee - the first appointment to that committee from our council.  He had also served as Section adviser and as Area Adviser.  He also served on the national committee for Handicapped Scouting.

1979

Summer Fellowship had 201 attending of which 150 were Candidates.

Bert Holfeltz was appointed to succeed Dr. Fairbanks as the Lodge Adviser.  Bert had been a Scoutmaster, District Vice Chairman, and a Chapter Adviser prior to his appointment.  Doc had served for 14 years.

1975

Aug - Dr. Bryce Fairbanks Awarded the Distinguish Service Award for his service to the OA.  - the first recipient from our lodge.

The annual Lodge Banquet  was held in the Ballroom of the University of Utah Union Building and was a smorgasbord dinner

1974

George Cannon was the editor of The Echo, his son Caleb would later become the Lodge Chief and serve 2 terms.

1973

The Lodge established its first computerized records, but the attempt did not last long since it depended on borrowed computer time.

1972

The Lodge produced it first Where to Go Camping book that was soft bound by the Deseret Press.  It was over 100 pages in length with maps and photos.  It also produced the first filmstrip on council camps.

1971

The name of the newsletter was change to The Echo.  Over 100 attended the Fall Conclave for the election of officers.

Over 1500 Candidates joined the OA at East fork.  Unfortunately, most did not stay for the 2nd year.

1970

The name of the newsletter was the Target at this time.  There were 13 chapters and the lodge was involved in the division of duties between youth and adults.

Over 1400 new Ordeals joined the Ordeal at East Fork.  Adult Candidates built the director's cabin at Frontier.

Dr. Bryce Fairbanks was appointed to succeed Vernon Mattson as the Lodge Adviser.  Dr. Fairbank (Doc) had been a scoutmaster and had otherwise served in Scouting.

1961

Vernon Mattson was appointed to Succeed Vernao Howes as the Lodge Adviser.  he grew up in Ogden, had been a Scoutmaster and was the Wasatch District Camping Chairman at the tiem of his appointment.

One of the lodge events during this year was a Social and Dance.

Ralph Howes was appointed to serve as the Lodge Adviser Not much has been recorded about him or his Scouting Background. He joined the Lodge when it was formed and had 2 sons who were also members.

Jun - the El-Ku-Ta Lodge was formed with an induction of 17 members at Steiner.  Most of them were on the Steiner Staff.  Bert Zarr, a German Teacher at East High was the Camp director.  His son would later serve as the Lodge Chief..
